Investing in Your Health: The Overlooked Key to a Thriving Early Retirement

When José and I first embarked on our journey towards early retirement, we thought it was all about the numbers. How much could we save? What would our withdrawal rate be? Where could we live to stretch our dollars further? But as we delved deeper into our planning, we realized we were overlooking the most crucial factor: our health.

The Epiphany: Health is Wealth

It hit us like a ton of bricks one day. What good would all our careful financial planning be if we weren’t healthy enough to enjoy our freedom? That’s when we decided to make a radical shift in our approach to early retirement. We started viewing our health as our most valuable asset—one that needed just as much investment and attention as our financial portfolio.

Our Holistic Approach to Health

We didn’t just want to be “not sick”—we wanted to thrive. So, we developed a comprehensive strategy that addressed every aspect of our well-being:

  1. Nutrition Revolution: After watching “Forks Over Knives,” we embarked on a six-week vegan challenge. It was eye-opening. We didn’t stick to veganism completely, but it dramatically changed how we approach food. Now, we focus on whole, plant-based foods with minimal processing. Yes, organic produce can be pricier, but we view it as an investment in our future health.
  2. Joyful Movement: Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore. We discovered that by finding activities we genuinely enjoy—like dancing, team sports, and yoga—staying active became effortless. Plus, many of these activities are free or low-cost, aligning perfectly with our financial goals.
  3. Toxin-Free Living: “The Human Experiment” documentary was a wake-up call. We gradually overhauled our personal care products, opting for natural alternatives. It was a process, but now we feel better knowing we’re reducing our exposure to harmful chemicals.
  4. Balancing Act: Learning about body pH was fascinating. We now start each day with lemon water and pay attention to alkaline-forming foods. It’s a simple change that makes us feel more energized.
  5. Mental and Spiritual Wellness: Meditation and spiritual practices have become non-negotiable parts of our routine. They help us manage stress and stay grounded—crucial skills for navigating the ups and downs of early retirement planning.
  6. Soul-Nourishing Activities: We each took time to identify what truly makes our souls sing. For me, it’s creative writing and volunteering. For my partner, it’s music and mentoring. We make sure to prioritize these activities, knowing they’re essential for our long-term happiness.

The Unexpected Benefits

As we implemented these changes, we noticed immediate improvements in our energy levels and overall well-being. But the real surprise came during our annual check-ups. Our doctors were amazed by our improved health markers—lower blood pressure, better cholesterol levels, and optimal blood sugar.

These health improvements have had a ripple effect on our financial planning. We’re now confident that we can opt for high-deductible health insurance plans in early retirement, potentially saving thousands each year. More importantly, we’re setting ourselves up to fully enjoy the freedom we’re working so hard to achieve.

Your Turn: Small Steps, Big Impact

If this all seems overwhelming, remember that we didn’t change everything overnight. Start with one small change—maybe swapping out a processed snack for fresh fruit or taking a daily walk. Pay attention to how you feel. Let that positive reinforcement fuel your next change.

Remember, the goal of early retirement isn’t just to stop working—it’s to create a life you love. By investing in your health now, you’re ensuring that you’ll have the vitality to make the most of your freedom later.
